What is strikethrough text?
Strikethrough text has a horizontal line drawn through it, conventionally meaning "deleted", "no longer true" or "corrected". Online it is used for jokes, price reductions and edited thoughts.

Frequently asked questions
How is strikethrough text created without formatting?
Each character is followed by a Unicode combining mark — U+0336 for a long stroke, U+0334 for a tilde overlay, U+0332 for an underline. The mark renders on top of the preceding letter, so the effect travels with plain text.
Does strikethrough text work on Discord and WhatsApp?
Those apps have their own markup (~~text~~ on Discord, ~text~ on WhatsApp). This Unicode version also works and is useful where markup is not supported, such as Instagram and your display name.
Why does the line sometimes look uneven?
Rendering of combining marks varies by font and platform. Spaces can show a gap in the line. It will still be recognisably struck through everywhere.
Can screen readers read this?
Most will read the base letters and ignore the combining marks, though some announce them. Avoid using it for critical information.
Is there a character limit?
No, but each character roughly doubles in byte length, so very long passages may hit an app's limit sooner.
