What a word counter measures

A word counter reports the length of a piece of writing in several units at once: words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs and lines. It is the quickest way to check you are within an essay limit, a meta-description length or a social-media cap.

Reading and speaking time

The tool converts your word count into an estimated reading time (238 wpm) and speaking time (130 wpm) so you can plan blog posts, scripts and speeches.

Keyword density table

The density table lists your 20 most frequent meaningful words with a count and a percentage. Toggle stop-word removal to include or exclude words like "the" and "and".

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

Text is split on whitespace and each non-empty chunk is counted as one word. Hyphenated terms like "well-known" count as a single word; numbers and standalone symbols separated by spaces count as words too.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute; speaking time assumes 130 words per minute, which matches a typical presentation pace.

Does the character count include spaces?

Both figures are shown: characters with spaces (the full length) and characters without spaces, which is what many assignment and social-media limits actually measure.

What is keyword density?

Keyword density is how often a word appears as a percentage of total words. Writers and SEOs use it to check that a piece is not over-using a term. Common filler words are excluded by default.

Is there a word limit?

No. You can paste an entire thesis and the counts update instantly, all within your browser.
